LATEST UPDATE TO THE RHUMBA DATE SET OF MORGAN DOLLARS IN GENERATION 1.2 RATTLER PCGS HOLDERS.
April 26th, 2019 – Central States Heritage Auction – this latest entry into our coin journal for the Rhumba date set of Morgan Dollars still housed in First Generation Holders “Rattlers” – nearly 6 years after starting the quest and eight months from our last upgrade – we successfully upgraded our lowest graded coin in the set. Here is the description from the Heritage auction site.
“1894-S $1 MS64 PCGS. VAM-1A. The “Worm Eye” variety with a “long vertical die gouge at eye front,” as described by VAMWorld.com. A hint of butter-gold patina graces this lustrous better-date silver dollar. The cheek is remarkably smooth, though the eagle’s right (facing) leg is abraded. The central strike is slightly soft. Certified in a first generation holder.
Ex: Dallas Signature (Heritage, 12/2005), lot 2550, which realized $1,610.(Registry values: P6, N1793) (NGC ID# 255X, PCGS# 7232)”
When we last recorded the addition of the 1889-S in MS65 and reported that the journaling part of this quest was now over – I did say that the treasure hunting part is NOT over – that is to say that if a coin does appear anytime in the future, even after the book is finished, that we may continue to upgrade the set. I hope I never lose the Treasure Hunting passion and that all of you reading this have been inspired to join the hunt with us.
1894-S MS64 (VAM-1A) We have not only assembled a complete date set of Morgan Silver Dollars in Mint State – But have improved our PCGS weighted average of Mint State 65.018 to a new average 65.107 and improved our registry position from 29th to 28th place as of 4-27-2019.
