Own a Real American Treasure!

In the world of numismatics, the 1921 Morgan Dollar has been an under-appreciated ending to the most beloved & most collected Morgan Dollar series.

Fortunately for all of us, there is one group of 1921 Morgan Dollars that bridges the gap between numismatics, history, and Real American Treasure.

10 Coins – all born on May 5th, 1921, at the Denver Mint.

At the onset of the “Roaring Twenties” our country needed circulating coinage and currency. The effects of the 1918 Pittman Act melted 259 million of the country’s 271 million silver dollars – sending the bullion to India in support of Great Britain shoring up finances to secure the end of World War 1.

Thus, the second part of the Pittman Act was to authorize the replacement of the 259 million silver coins melted – opening the door, for the first time in its history, for the Denver Mint to produce silver dollars.

New dies were quickly made up, with the year 1921 on the obverse and the newest reverse added to the Morgan Dollar line with the small “d” Denver Mint mark added for use in the Denver Mint.

Submitted to the Professional Coin Grading Services company (PGCS) in 1992 for authenticity and grading, this coin was graded with PGCS’s newest innovative encapsulation program at the time, The Regency Holder.

Launched in 1992, fewer coins were encapsulated in these holders than any other holder – creating the first level of a treasure within a treasure:

  1. The coin itself.
  2. Authentication by PCGS.
  3. Encapsulation in the absolute rarest of all PCGS holders: a Regency Holder.

While Coin Number 9 is finally shown some well-deserved love, it doesn’t stop there.

PCGS would create another first with Number 9 by becoming one of the first coins ever encapsulated by PCGS without a numeric grade at all.

Due to the current rules in place at PGCS at the time, coins were unable to be graded with engravings or inscriptions until the early 2000s. So PGCS simply put this coin into a Regency Holder, and left it at that.

On November 17th, 2021, I flew out to the Northeast to personally pick-up this Numismatic Historic Treasure, finally getting to hold it in my hands for the first time!

Now we needed to figure out what to do with this amazing National Treasure. History, time, and PCGS to the rescue – as they no longer had rules about grading inscribed coins.

During a trip to the Members Only PCGS Show in Las Vegas, we handed the coin once again to the PCGS team to formulate how to give this Lady the long overdue love she deserved – an actual numeric grade with special designation, while keeping her in her original Regency Holder to celebrate and honor both the coin’s 100th Year Anniversary and the Regency Holder’s 30th Anniversary.

Without further ado – and with great pleasure, allow us to introduce to you one of the the finest known survivors of the first 12 coins released from the Denver Mint graded by PCGS.

Fresh from a second visit to the PCGS grading room – The 9th Coin Released by the Denver Mint, May 5th of 1921 now graded SP64 (PCGS as a rule will not grade inscribed coins higher than 64) a lone top pop in this new SP category which covers “Special Strike” coins as well as “Specimen Proofs” and various other “so-called proofs.”

This coin clearly falls into the specially struck category. Amazingly she is also another first and possibly only Regency encapsulated coin to be encapsulated in a second protective layer of plastic in order to place the grading label on the reverse of the coin, preserving the overall appearance of the original Regency Holder.

So…hold your nose, close your eyes, and take a drink of this real Numismatic Love Potion Number 9!
